We’re biased, obviously — we’d love for you to hire us. But whether you call Nautilus Group or someone else, here’s what we think every Helena homeowner should know before hiring a cleaning service.

Check for Insurance and Bonding

This is the first question you should ask any cleaning company, and it’s the one most people skip. If someone is cleaning your home and accidentally damages something — a broken vase, a scratched floor, a water mishap — their insurance should cover it, not yours.

In Helena, you’ll find a mix of licensed cleaning companies and independent cleaners advertising on Facebook or Nextdoor. Independent cleaners can absolutely do good work. But if they’re not insured, you’re carrying the risk.

Ask for proof of insurance. Any legitimate company will provide it without hesitation. If they get defensive or dodge the question, that tells you something.

Verify Their Business License

Montana requires cleaning companies operating as independent contractors to have proper business registration. This isn’t just paperwork — it means they’re operating as a legitimate business, with real accountability if something goes wrong.

Ask What’s Included

“House cleaning” means different things to different companies. Before you book, get clarity on:

  • What rooms and surfaces are covered in a standard clean?
  • Are supplies and equipment included, or do you provide them?
  • What counts as an “extra” that adds to the price?
  • Do they move furniture to vacuum behind it, or just clean around it?

Getting this in writing (or at least clearly communicated) avoids the awkward “I thought that was included” conversation later.

Look for Reviews — But Read Them Carefully

Google reviews, Yelp, Facebook recommendations — these all matter. But pay attention to the details in reviews, not just the star count:

  • Do reviewers mention reliability and showing up on time?
  • Do they mention consistency between visits?
  • Are the reviews from people in Helena, or from a previous location?
  • Are there recent reviews, or did they all come in at once two years ago?

Ask About Their Products

If you have kids, pets, or anyone with chemical sensitivities in your home, this matters. Some cleaning companies use heavy-duty commercial chemicals. Others (like us) use eco-friendly products that are safer for your family and still get the job done.

This is also a question for homes with hardwood floors, natural stone, or other surfaces that can be damaged by the wrong cleaning products.

Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, you’re letting someone into your home. The right cleaning company should make you feel comfortable. They should communicate clearly, show up when they say they will, and do what they promised.

David and WendiSue here at Nautilus Group built this business on exactly that — showing up, doing the work, and standing behind it. We’re fully insured, bonded, licensed, and happy to answer any questions before you book. If that sounds like the kind of cleaning service you’ve been looking for, we’d love to hear from you.
